CHAPTER 14

Olivia busied herself fastening the chip bag closed and cleaning up the coffee table while Grant hustled around the kitchen. She was trying to get her hormones under control so they could have a regular dinner together. Was their connection so intense because they knew each other so well or because they trusted each other beyond measure or because their chemistry simply was just that explosive?

Not that she planned on depriving herself of more earth-shattering sex tonight. But twelve hours from now, they’d be packing up the SUV to head back to San Diego. With Toby.

Attempting to act like nothing had changed.

As she collected the dishes, she glanced over her shoulder, impressed at the sight of Grant simply plucking a bottle of olive oil from a tall cabinet. Naturally graceful in all his tawny glory. Finding the balance of separating their physical connection and their lifelong friendship promised to be a challenge. She and Grant had always shared an undefinable bond, an easy compatibility.

Tonight was about romance and finishing their time together with a bang––she silently snickered, no pun intended. Plenty of time to worry about repercussions later. She crossed the room and ran one hand down his solid back. “Do you need any help? Want me to chop anything or…?”

He shook his head and smiled down at her. “No, this is one of the few meals I’ve got down. Why don’t you relax?”

If she sat and watched him cook with all those defined muscles rippling, she’d overheat before the water boiled for the spaghetti. Nope, she needed to distract herself for the next few minutes.

She smirked to herself. She needed a solid dinner to fuel the rest of the evening.

“You know what, I’ll go organize all our gear in the garage so it’s ready to go. I know Toby wants to leave early to avoid traffic. We don’t need a repeat of that slowdown that we hit on the way up.”

He nodded and gathered bowls for the pasta, cheese, pancetta, and salt and pepper. “Yeah, you’re right. That’d be great.”

She grabbed Toby’s key fob and her coat and entered the garage. She double-checked their gear hanging on the wall racks and everything was blessedly dry. Their snowboard boots and helmets were strewn in a haphazard pile beneath them.

She shook her head. Both Toby and Grant had always been messy little pigs. She’d thought they’d grow out of it once they became adults, but everything was dumped in heaps just like when they’d been teens. The guys had teased her about being a control freak with her obsessive need for order and they were probably right. Being excessively neat was quite helpful in her chosen profession, thank you very much.

And her tumultuous childhood with her loving, but disorganized single mom and subsequent role as a caretaker at seventeen had cemented her need for ruthless organization. She simply felt better when everything was in place. And she wasn’t alone. Hadn’t everyone seen the big trend toward the life benefits of ridding your home of clutter? Feng shui and all that?

Organizing stuff relaxed her.
